Update #2: Well, my GERD doesn’t seem to have got any better. I started taking some over the counter Omeprazole yesterday. I’ll only do 14 days at a time though.

I’m not giving up on the vinegar (acetic acid) 3x a day, especially after reading THIS!

Ok, Chemistry and Industry News only allows if a subscriber, so here are some google hits-
http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=Zetia+niacin

Niaspan, made by Abbott, Is essentially slow release Niacin, which is vitamin B3 which is simply pyridine, substituted with CABOXYLIC ACID at the meta position. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niacin Perhaps taking acetate causes the body to make extra niacin? If my cholesterol doesn’t stay low, I’ll switch to slow release niacin. Note some warnings and suggestions apply (i.e. aspirin ½ before to ease side effects- flushing/ itching- I take ¼ aspirin 2x a day anyway) but no worse than the statins.

By the way, I thought I was getting aches and pains due to old age, but I haven’t had them since stopping Lipitor!

Be wary of a smokescreen by the pharmaceutical companies.

Oh, and I NOT giving up my coffee addiction! Or beer (hops) No way! See these!

http://www.renalandurologynews.com/coffee-may-lower-risk-of-aggressive-prostate-cancer/article/159208/ 50,000 men every four years from 1986 to 2006. Prostate cancer developed in 4,975 men during this period. 89% less for coffee drinkers!!

I fixed two things..teaspoons vs oz and added water to 1 gallon total. oops.

I’ll explain my rant. Five years ago I found out I had GERD. My specialist had me start taking Protonix. I did for about 3 years. I stopped them because I was worried about calcium absorption, and anyway after I quit tobacco I figured I’d be ok. I was ok, besides needing a shot of sodium bicarbonate when I over ate and/ or drank wine and/or ate certain stuff.

I took a full dose of Lipitor for over 5 years, started worrying about side effects and started taking 1/2. Cholesterol, etc results have been fine for over a year on 1/2 pill. Regular liver tests ok, I guess.

After returning for another lower spelunking recently with the specialist, we was acting annoyed I stopped the Protonix. He wrote a prescription. Turns out there are no generics and now my insurance says my co-pay is $169 for 30 pills at CVS.

Oh, my insurance hasn’t paid for Lipitor for a year or so. No generic. They have been costing me $288 for 90 pills. The best deal we could find.

These drugs worked for me, I don’t like being jacked around to totally different new less-tested molecules that are new to me just to save insurance plan money. . That’s just nuts.

Oh, Google say Canada’s a lot cheaper?!

I learned today that taking Protonix(or any other proton pump inhibitor) for 5 – 7 years raises the risk of hip fracture 2-5 TIMES. Think my specialist gives a damn about that? I’m out of Lipitor as of yesterday and am not going to take the Protonics. I read apple cider vinegar (with sodium bicarbonate to save on tooth erosion) treats both. Tonight I made up, into 3/4 gallon water, 64 teaspoons Heinz real apple cider vinegar + 12 teaspoons sodium bicarbonate (watch the bubbles), and trusty pH meter read 6.75…check, added more water to 1 gallon total liquid, then 1/2 cup apple juice and on apple cut into pieces. I Figure 1/4 cup = 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar and will take 3 times a day. It tasted fine, even before refrigeration. Wish me luck. I’m a scientist, but I figure I’m less likely to die young and/ or go broke this way. I’ll let you know how my next cholesterol, etc results go. David maybe won’t print this, since he’s a medical professional. No offense intended. My daughter might be proud. She’s taking natural medicine classes out David’s way. In Portland OR.

Now, if I could only get some medical mari…oh never mind.
